Ear Irrigation vs Ear Syringing?
Ear irrigation is a method of removing earwax using a gentle flow of warm water. The water is directed carefully into the ear canal to help loosen and flush out excess wax. A small bowl is held beneath the ear to collect the water and wax as they are removed.
Modern ear irrigation machines allow the practitioner to control the water pressure and temperature. The ear is also checked throughout the procedure to monitor progress and ensure the treatment is being carried out appropriately.
Although many people still refer to this treatment as ear syringing, the equipment and techniques used today have developed considerably from the traditional method.
How is modern ear irrigation different from traditional ear syringing?
Traditional ear syringing involved using a hand-operated syringe to push water into the ear canal. The pressure depended on the force applied by the practitioner, and it was more difficult to maintain a consistent water temperature and flow.
Modern electronic irrigation machines offer greater control over both the pressure and temperature of the water. The water is warmed to approximately body temperature, helping to make the procedure more comfortable. The practitioner can also stop or adjust the flow throughout treatment as needed.
Careful technique is essential, as ear irrigation is not suitable for everyone. Before treatment, the practitioner should assess the ears and medical history to determine whether irrigation is an appropriate option.
Your Ears, Our Care
Is Ear Irrigation still used today?
Ear irrigation remains one of the methods used by trained practitioners to remove earwax. Another option is microsuction, which involves using gentle suction to remove wax under direct visual guidance.
At South West Ear Care, we offer earwax removal using warm water irrigation and/or microsuction. Following an initial ear examination, we can discuss the most suitable approach based on your individual needs and the condition of your ears.
